Anti-Defamation League condemns parade commemorating Nazi invasion of Latvia

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today condemned a march in Riga celebrating the anniversary of the Nazi invasion of Latvia on July 1, 1941, calling it the “height of insensitivity to victims of Nazism in Latvia and across Europe”. Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director issued the following statement:
“The Nazi invasion of Latvia sixty-nine years ago led to the murder of 90,000 Latvians, including 70,000 Latvian Jews and 2,000 Roma.  To celebrate this anniversary and present the Nazis as the “liberators” of Latvia, is the height of insensitivity to the victims of Nazism in Latvia and across Europe. We appreciate the statement of Latvia’s prime minister and the foreign ministry condemning this event.  However, we are concerned that this incident is part of a larger trend among nationalists in the Baltics and elsewhere in Eastern Europe to equate the Nazi genocide with the repression and crimes of the Communists. In the case of the Riga march, the organizers seem to prefer the Nazis to the Communists, whitewashing what came after July 1, 1941 and presenting the German army as the “liberators” of Latvia from the Soviet Union”.
The Riga City Council had banned the march, but the decision was overturned by the Administrative District Court.

26 million rubles sent for development of public broadcasting in Kirov Region in 2008

18 television broadcasting facilities with total cost of 26 million rubles were built in Kirov Region in 2008, the regional department of industrial development informed REGNUM.
According to the department, these facilities were built in realization of the regional special program “Development of Television Network in Kirov Region in 2005-2009”.
The program is aimed at increasing and maximizing the coverage of the auidence of the region by socialTV packages on the regional level. In particular, no less than 75% of the regional audience are planned to be covered by broadcasting of the regional television network.

ADL: Planned march in Estonia insults memory of forced labour camp victims

Saying it would “trample on the memory” of World War II labor and concentration camp victims, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) condemned a march, planned for July 31 in Vaivara, Estonia, to honor an Estonian division of the Nazi SS that fought in a 1944 battle against Soviet troops.
Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director and a Holocaust survivor, issued the following statement: “Opposing Soviet repression is one thing, but celebrating the Nazi SS is quite another.  Unfortunately, in the past we have seen Estonian officials participate in such events, rather than oppose them.  Vaivara should evoke mourning and reflection, not celebration. Twenty thousand Jews from across the Baltics were imprisoned in the Vaivara camps, as were other victims and prisoners of war.  Every two weeks the Jews who were too sick or frail to work were murdered.  Those who march will trample on their memory.  A telling choice once again lies before Estonian officials.  They, along with responsible members of Estonian civil society, should unequivocally condemn the planned march in Vaivara. The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry”/

Latvia did not support Georgia’s initiative to move Olympics from Sochi

Political differences should not hamper both sports and culture and decision concerned the venue for the Olympics is in the competence of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), a REGNUM correspondent was informed at the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia today on November, 26. Besides, according to spokeswoman for the ministry, Diana Eglite, Latvia's ambassador in Moscow, Andris Teykmanis said today to journalists that Latvia in spite of Georgian calls would take part at Olympics 2014 in Sochi.
Earlier, on November, 25, the Sports and Youth Issues Committee of the Georgian Parliament sent a letter to the Latvian Saeima subcommittee on Sports where the Georgian side called Latvian parliamentarians to back the idea of lifting the decisions to hold the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in the Russian city of Sochi for political reasons. Georgia also applied to the International Olympic Committee to move Winter Olympics 2014 from Sochi for security reasons.

What Are Human Rights?

Human Rights Defined

While some dictionaries define the word right as “a privilege,” when used in the context of “human rights,” we are talking about something more basic.*
Every person is entitled to certain fundamental rights, simply by the fact of being human. These are called “human rights” rather than a privilege (which can be taken away at someone’s whim).
They are “rights” because they are things you are allowed to be, to do or to have. These rights are there for your protection against people who might want to harm or hurt you. They are also there to help us get along with each other and live in peace.
Many people know something about their rights. Generally they know they have the right to food and a safe place to stay. They know they have a right to be paid for the work they do. But there are many other rights.
When human rights are not well known by people, abuses such as discrimination, intolerance, injustice, oppression and slavery can arise.
Born out of the atrocities and enormous loss of life during World War II, the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948 to provide a common understanding of what everyone’s rights are. It forms the basis for a world built on freedom, justice and peace.

The Marketing Power of Mat Features

The Marketing Power of Mat Features

(P-O-P-S) While most small business marketers are aware that press releases are the standard bill of fare for passing along information to the media, they are unaware of other ways that larger organizations using public relations firms make their information more usable.

One idea that small businesses can afford is to hire a mat feature service to convert your information into a newsworthy soft feature on a topic that the public is interested in reading about. Large corporations have been using this type of service for years and pay PR firms big bucks to include these columns in their corporate PR programs. Intended to reach consumers in the wealthy suburbs, these features are distributed to the more than 10,000 newspapers nationwide and receive regular pickup. Further, these columns are often printed exactly as written.

While these feature services used to handle only corporations, now there is a firm that caters to the small business company to make this service accessible to those on limited budgets. Points of Persuasion Syndicate (P-O-P-S) is headed up by a PR expert with more than 15 years of experience with some of the largest PR firms in the world as well as famed corporate companies like Avon Products. By incorporating mentions of your product or service into a captioned graphic and a brief feature that newspapers find informational rather than promotional, you have two opportunities to put your product or service center stage – and the features are preformatted so clients approve what they say. Further, they are priced at half of what the other mat feature services charge.

These columns can be linked to your own web site, can be included in brochures, are picked up by web site article directories and can achieve endless publicity mileage when used correctly. For a small investment, you get large public relations exposure.

China takes de facto control of restive region in PoK

NEW YORK: In a quiet move, China has deployed about 11,000 troops in the strategic Gilgit-Baltistan region in the occupied Kashmir to take de-facto control of the key area, where a rebellion is simmering against the Pakistani rule.

The New York Times said that there were two important new developments in Gilgit-Baltistan; a simmering rebellion against the Pakistani rule and the influx of an estimated 7,000 to 11,000 soldiers of the Chinese People's Liberation Army in the area, which is closed to the world.

"China wants a grip on the strategic area to assure unfettered road and rail access to the Gulf through Pakistan", the paper said, and for this purpose is building high-speed rail and road link.

The link up would enable Beijing to transport cargo and oil tankers from eastern China to the new Chinese built Pakistani Naval base at Gawadar, Pasni and Ormara in Balochistan, just east of the Gulf in 48 hours.

"Many of the PLA soldiers entering Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to work on the railroad. Some are extending the Karakoram Highway, built to link China's Xinjiang province with Pakistan. Others are working on dams, expressways and other project," the paper said.

Beijing removed Indian maps from Expo, back in July

BEIJING: Beijing's refusal to give a visa to an Army general because he commanded troops in J&K may have hurt relations but China betrayed signs it was hardening its approach to India in July. That was when officers of China's Public Security Bureau (PSB) marched unannounced into the India Pavilion at the World Expo2010 in Shanghai and confiscated brochures bearing a map of India.

Indian government officials told TOI that the PSB said they were taking the maps away because China objects to showing Arunachal Pradesh as part of Indian territory. Beijing claims Arunachal and does not recognize the frontier as a border. The PSB is really a euphemism for the police and is empowered to monitor foreign visitors and control dissent on campuses.

''They should have sent a letter to the Indian government instead of simply walking in and taking away the maps,'' an official said. The India Tourism Promotion Board, which put up the pavilion, and the Indian Consulate in Shanghai were not informed ahead of the incident of July 12. It happened within days of the National Security Adviser Shiv Shankar Menon visiting Beijing as Manmohan Singh's special envoy and meeting premier Wen Jiabao. Ironically, China has not objected to Pakistan distributing maps showing another disputed area, Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, on Chinese soil.

How to Win a Beauty Pageant

Every girl who enters a beauty pageant has one goal in mind- winning. However, no matter how beautiful or talented each contestant is, there can only be one winner. So, you may be asking yourself the number one question. What can I do to win a beauty pageant? To begin with, if you want to win a beauty pageant you will have to do your research and prepare for hard work.

Just being a beautiful girl is not going to make you a winner. In fact, beauty pageants consist of more events then simple appearance alone. You must be prepared to present yourself as an eloquent and intelligent speaker, you must be poised, dignified, and showcase your talent with expertise. All of this requires hard work, determination, and taking the time to research each beauty pageants rules as well as their history.

One of the most important steps that you can take to ensure that you win is to hire a beauty pageant coach. Studies have shown that the majority of beauty pageant winners have coaches. Coaches are privy to information regarding simple things that the judges are looking for. The pageant contestant may inadvertently ignore these simple things. For example, ensuring that you have the proper model stance can be the difference between first place and runner up. Most beauty pageant winners are the first to admit that their coaches played a vital role in their success.

Training hard is essential to ensuring that you win your next beauty pageant. You will need to practice your public speaking skills, your specific talent, your walk, modeling stance, as well as work on your smile, hair and makeup. It is a good idea to study videotapes of previous winners of the beauty pageants that you are competing in. This is a great way to see what qualities the judges are looking for in a winner.

You will also need to have an enormous amount of self-discipline. Winning a beauty pageant requires that you are disciplined in every aspect of your life. You should consider the beauty pageant as if it were a marathon or an event that you were in training for. Discipline in your sleeping habits, exercise routine, and nutrition are essential to ensuring that you remain in prime condition. Many women have lost their spot as a beauty pageant winner due to overindulgence in food, drinking, and lacking exercise. You must be committed to doing whatever it takes to win your next beauty pageant to see your dream come true.

Make sure that you always behave appropriately and respectfully. This includes how you treat the other contestants, the judges, and the organizers of the contest. If you present yourself as having a horrible, snobby attitude you will find that it will work against you in the long run. Often times, people confuse self-confidence with arrogance. They are definitely two different things. Judges are looking for a woman who exudes grace as well as confidence, but a woman who presents herself as believing that she is better than everyone else and treats other people badly will never be successful.

How Do I Put Music On My PSP?

Sony Playstation Portable or PSP has become very versatile in terms of its applications and functional approach. The initial thought of having a portable game console have paved the road of multi-tasking and multi-function console, it sure has out grown its creativity from creator. The PSP console is more than just a game consoles, it has the capability as a portable video & movie player, web browser, personal organizer, music player and more.

I'm going to share with you how do I put music on my PSP and making it my universal digital walkman. It is a very simple procedure to put any of your favorite music into PSP. Before we begin discussing how to download or transfer music on to the PSP, we must understand that PSP do not accept all forms or formats of music file. Depending on the version of firmware your PSP is loaded. Early version of PSP firmware can only playback mp3 music format and it does not support playback of WMA and WMV audio files, making it less appreciable. However much later, firmware of PSP is able to playback WMA and WMV audio files. To do that on any early version, the PSP firmware needs to be upgraded to playback WMA and WMV audio files directly from PSP. And even if your PSP are able to playback WMA and WMV audio files I would not recommend because of its file size compare to mp3 format.

Generally mp3 music or audio file format takes up far less storage space compare to any audio or music file format. To convert any audio file format is relatively a simple task as lots of mp3 file format converter programs are already available from the internet. You can find huge list of mp3 format converter from the search engine and most of them are capable of converting any music or audio file format to mp3. The procedure provided by most mp3 file format converter program are most dummy proofed. Hardly anyone will find any difficulties in using these programs.

Once you have converted you favorite music files to mp3 then you are ready to put music on PSP. To put music on PSP you first need to connect your PSP to your PC by using the USB cable. Next, you press "Home" button and follow by scroll to "Setting" using the left-right buttons. And finally you search for "USB Connection" and press the "X" button to enter your selection.

On your PC, it will begin to show a removable drive has been detected and mounted on "My Computer" window. Click and open the new removable drive and a folder named "PSP" will appear within the drive. Open the "PSP" folder and you should find "Music" folder from within it. If the "Music" folder does not exist, manually create it yourself.

Now you can begin to put your favorite music on PSP console. Simply drag and drop if you like or copy & paste your favorite music and store in this folder of the memory stick. Once you are finished with transferring or putting your music file onto PSP, press the "O" button on your Sony PSP console to exit your PSP from the USB connection. Unplug your Sony PSP from the USB connection and you can begin playback your mp3 music files and simply enjoy your music anywhere and anytime you want.

Why everybody needs to try more loft—and that means you! New Golf Digest testing proves you need more loft on your driver than you think

Dick Helmstetter remembers the first time he saw a group of long drivers in training. This was long before portable launch monitors, laser-distance-measuring devices or even reliable swing-speed gauges.
"They were using stopwatches," says Helmstetter, Callaway Golf's senior executive vice president and chief of new products. "They figured 10 seconds of hang time was what they needed to be competitive. They had it figured out back then. They knew that the longer the ball stays in the air, the farther it's going to go. Period."
The lesson of the stopwatches from years ago has been confirmed by recent Golf Digest player and robot testing. Higher is better. The action plan for average golfers is simple: Take the headcover off your No. 1 club right now. If the numeral on the sole is less than 10, and you are not a member of the PGA Tour, try a driver with more loft. It could change your life.
"The single thing that I have found to help people hit the ball better with the driver is to give them higher loft," says Tom Stites, director of product creation for Nike Golf. He's convinced that about 90 percent of average recreational golfers would see better results if they could add 1 or 2 degrees of loft to their drivers. "But golfers really do have a psychological barrier to loft," he adds.
Even older pros are learning the benefits of more loft. Lanny Wadkins, who has played high-level golf for more than 30 years, has always been known as the quintessential low-ball hitter, and he played drivers with as little loft as possible during his glory days as a pro. He's a changed man.
"The launch monitor has taught us all to try to launch it higher with less spin," says Wadkins, who says more loft also helps him work the ball. "I started thinking about it after watching a long-drive exhibition. I thought they were popping the ball up. But then I saw those pop-ups were going 330, 340."
So what's the loft on Lanny's new driver? 9 degrees? 9.5? Try 10. "I'm enjoying the new technology," he says. For you to do the same, the short answer is go higher.
10 more yards
For most golfers, adding loft to their drivers will add an average of at least 10 yards to their drives.
That's right. Shots hit by a higher-lofted club flew an average of 10.8 yards farther than those hit with 9-degree drivers at robot swing speeds of 65 to 95 miles per hour (the range for most golfers). The robot tests were performed for Golf Digest by Gene Parente, owner of Golf Laboratories Inc. in San Diego.
Does this mean we all should dump our 9-degree drivers for new clubs with 3-wood loft? Not exactly. As driver technology improves, a loft designation becomes more of an afterthought. Instead, focus on getting the proper launch angle and ball flight.

Rules: Grounding a club - Brief Article

SITUATION: Player A, while competing in a stroke-play championship, discovers his ball in a sand bunker. (A sand bunker is a hazard. Grass-covered ground bordering a sand bunker, or within one, is not considered part of the hazard. A ball is in a bunker when any part of it touches a bunker.)
COMMON MISTAKE: In taking his address, Player A rests the bottom of the club on the ground. Rule 13-4 does not permit grounding the club in a sand bunker or water hazard. Hence, Player A must incur a two-stroke penalty. In match play, the penalty is loss of hole.CORRECT PROCEDURE: When preparing to hit a recovery shot from a sand bunker (or water hazard), make sure to keep the club elevated. The bottom of the club is not allowed to touch the sand, the surface of the water, or any area of ground inside the hazard.

RULES OF THE GAME : What Is 'Grounding the Club'?

Throughout his career, Jack Nicklaus has never grounded his club at address. Rather, he hovers the clubhead above the grass to preclude a violation of Rule 18-2b covering "Ball moving after address." (One of the requirements of addressing the ball, except in a bunker or water hazard, is grounding the club.)
But did Nicklaus' habit save him in water hazards, where the player is not permitted to touch the ground or the water within the hazard (Rule 13-4)? What if Nicklaus brushed the tops of tall grass within the water hazard while hovering the clubhead, or while taking a practice swing? The answer is found in Decision 13-4/4: No penalty, "provided the player did not improve his lie or test the condition of the hazard."
Another hypothetical situation: Suppose Nicklaus' ball were in the water hazard, and he took his stance and hovered his club. What if the ball then moved? He would be penalized one stroke, and he would be required to replace the ball. Remember, when the player's ball is in a hazard, he need only take his stance to satisfy the definition of "addressing the ball."
Water hazards (and bunkers) are especially tricky on matters concerning grounding your club. If your ball lies on a bridge spanning a water hazard, you may ground your club on the bridge. If your ball touches a line defining the margin of the water hazard, you are permitted to ground your club outside the hazard.

Sample Interview Questions With Answers

Sample interview questions of the common type are listed below. Answers are included. But perhaps suggestions for tailoring your responses is a better way to put it, since specific answers are impossible to provide. Practice answering these sample interview questions out loud to yourself or ask a friend or relative to help you.

Don't feel that you have to answer right away. Interviewers know that you're nervous and expect you to think a bit, so do think carefully before you answer. But don't hesitate too long or it'll appear that you're stalling. Interviewers will ask open-ended questions to see where you'll go with them, so try not to ramble while you're thinking of a real answer.

Q.
Tell me about yourself.
A.
This is the dreaded, classic, open-ended interview question and likely to be among the first. It's your chance to introduce your qualifications, good work habits, etc. Keep it mostly work and career related.

Q.
Why do you want to leave your current job? (Why did you leave your last job?)
A.
Be careful with this. Avoid trashing other employers and making statements like, "I need more money." Instead, make generic statements such as, "It's a career move."

Q.
What are your strengths?
A.
Point out your positive attributes related to the job.

Q.
What are your weaknesses?
A.
Everybody has weaknesses, but don't spend too much time on this one and keep it work related. Along with a minor weakness or two, try to point out a couple of weaknesses that the interviewer might see as strengths, such as sometimes being a little too meticulous about the quality of your work. (Avoid saying "I work too hard." It's a predictable, common answer.) For every weakness, offer a strength that compensates for it.

Q.
Which adjectives would you use to describe yourself?
A.
Answer with positive, work-oriented adjectives, such as conscientious, hard-working, honest and courteous, plus a brief description or example of why each fits you well.

Q.
What do you know about our company?
A.
To answer this one, research the company before you interview.

Q.
Why do you want to work for us?
A.
Same as above. Research the company before you interview. Avoid the predictable, such as, "Because it's a great company." Say why you think it's a great company.

Q.
Why should I hire you?
A.
Point out your positive attributes related to the job, and the good job you've done in the past. Include any compliments you've received from management.

Q.
What past accomplishments gave you satisfaction?
A.
Briefly describe one to three work projects that made you proud or earned you pats on the back, promotions, raises, etc. Focus more on achievement than reward.

Q.
What makes you want to work hard?
A.
Naturally, material rewards such as perks, salary and benefits come into play. But again, focus more on achievement and the satisfaction you derive from it.

Q.
What type of work environment do you like best?
A.
Tailor your answer to the job. For example, if in doing your job you're required to lock the lab doors and work alone, then indicate that you enjoy being a team player when needed, but also enjoy working independently. If you're required to attend regular project planning and status meetings, then indicate that you're a strong team player and like being part of a team.

Q.
Why do you want this job?
A.
To help you answer this and related questions, study the job ad in advance. But a job ad alone may not be enough, so it's okay to ask questions about the job while you're answering. Say what attracts you to the job. Avoid the obvious and meaningless, such as, "I need a job."

Q.
How do you handle pressure and stress?
A.
This is sort of a double whammy, because you're likely already stressed from the interview and the interviewer can see if you're handling it well or not. Everybody feels stress, but the degree varies. Saying that you whine to your shrink, kick your dog or slam down a fifth of Jack Daniels are not good answers. Exercising, relaxing with a good book, socializing with friends or turning stress into productive energy are more along the lines of the "correct" answers.

Q.
Explain how you overcame a major obstacle.
A.
The interviewer is likely looking for a particular example of your problem-solving skills and the pride you show for solving it.

Q.
Where do you see yourself five (ten or fifteen) years from now?
A.
Explain your career-advancement goals that are in line with the job for which you are interviewing. Your interviewer is likely more interested in how he, she or the company will benefit from you achieving your goals than what you'll get from it, but it goes hand in hand to a large degree. It's not a good idea to tell your potential new boss that you'll be going after his or her job, but it's okay to mention that you'd like to earn a senior or management position.

Q.
What qualifies you for this job?
A.
Tout your skills, experience, education and other qualifications, especially those that match the job description well. Avoid just regurgitating your resume. Explain why.

Q.
Why did you choose your college major?
A.
The interviewer is likely fishing to see if you are interested in your field of work or just doing a job to get paid. Explain why you like it. Besides your personal interests, include some rock-solid business reasons that show you have vision and business sense.
